JPG is the safest if the image leaves the web (email, print, older apps). WebP works on every modern browser since 2020 and shrinks files roughly 25–35% smaller than JPG. AVIF is the smallest and ideal for image-heavy sites, but encode time is about 10× slower and Safari only added support in 16.4.
